Classical Translations

Contexts for Classics is interested in the long history of translating Greek and Latin texts, as an ongoing practice of critical and creative transformation, and in relation to the translation of other classical languages as well.

To explore the reception of classics through English translation, we sponsor classical translation workshops for faculty and students, often with visiting scholars and translators. Announcements of workshops are sent via our CfC email list.

To encourage students at UM to experiment with their own classical translations, we also sponsor the annual CfC Classical Translations Contest. The deadline for submissions is April 1.

See links for more information about this year's contest and examples of student translations from past years.
