Free and Open to the Public

Leonora Miano is an eminent and renowned novelist. Born in
Cameroon, she currently resides in France where she dedicates her
time to writing plays, fiction and songs. Miano entered the literary
world with her powerful novel, L’intérieur de la nuit/The Dark
Heart of the Night (2005). The novel has been honored with many
prestigious awards, including the Prix Louis-Guilloux

The music for this performance is a testament to Miano’s deep
interest in the effects of the slave trade on individuals. In these songs
she imagines the voices of both those who were taken from their homes and those who were left behind. Miano chose to use music to approach these intense and difficult subjects in the hopes that the music might find a way to bypass our egos and access the emotions of Others.

Miano will be accompanied by guitarist Justin Johnstone, who writes, records, and performs, in many genres, and by a percussionist on Conga drums.

Leonora Miano’s visit is co-sponsored by the Center for World Performance Studies Artist Residence Program, the Department of Comparative Literature, and the King Chazvez Parks Visiting Professors Program, with faculty sponsor, Professor Frieda Ekotto
