Biomolecular Structure & Dynamics

Structural Biologists at the University of Michigan use X-ray crystallography, solution and solid-state NMR and other spectroscopic methods together with computational approaches, and techniques from molecular biology to understand the function, structure, dynamics, and energetics of important biological macromolecules. Research topics range from the molecular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis to the development and application of state-of the-art NMR techniques to resolve the structural ensemble of non-coding RNAs and their protein complexes in solution. X-ray home sources as well as several state-of-the-art beamlines at the Advanced Photon Source in Chicago are available to students. Multiple NMR spectrometers of up to 800 MHz field strength with cryoprobes for fast throughput make the NMR facilities also first-rate in the nation.
