Make Friends, Make Money and Make a Difference this summer at Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum! We are hiring up to 40 full-time, PAID University of Michigan student interns to participate in our Nature Academy program from May – August, 2017. The Nature Academy serves the twofold purpose of accomplishing the work of the organization and training a new generation of environmental leaders in sustainability, conservation and ecological restoration. Matthaei-Nichols is the center for rich and diverse nature-based experiences for the University of Michigan and its surrounding communities.
There are four areas of interest to choose from: Farm and Field Services, Education and Visitor Engagement, Research and Curation, or Administrative Services.
In your application, you will rank your intern track preference and indicate if you are interested in also being considered for the Caretaker position. You will only need to submit one application for all of the openings that you are interested in.
Process and timeline: Complete an on-line application and attach your resume and cover letter. Applicants may be invited to interview in person or by telephone beginning Feb. 1, 2017. Job Duration: May through August.
Hours: 40 hours per week, including possible weekends and evenings.
Compensation: $10.00 – 12.00/hr
Required Qualifications: U-M student with a good work ethic, enthusiasm for teamwork and a willingness to learn is required. Most positions require an ability to lift up to 40lbs.
nichols arboretum caretaker
Caretakers are the eyes and ears of Nichols Arboretum. Caretakers work 10 hours per week in return for free lodging and utilities (with the exception of internet/cable) at the Arb. The work consists of physical outdoor manual labor and includes some lifting over 40 lbs. Work is performed independently and in groups. This requires a resilient person with a good work ethic and self-motivation. Job duties may include:
- Maintenance: trash removal, grounds maintenance and trail work.
- Natural Areas Stewardship: controlling invasive species with herbicide and prescribed fire.
- Supervising and leading volunteers, individuals and groups.
- Events: assist with parking and other event support as needed
There are two housing options and both include a private bedroom with shared common areas. Caretakers share living space and often work together on projects. This living/working relationship is best with flexible, team players who are willing to cooperate and cope with a constantly changing environment.
Caretakers must commit to a minimum of 12 months of continuous 10 hour/wk service beginning with a required training in early May. Caretakers will not be permitted to take extended absences for summer programs, study abroad, work or any other purpose. All caretakers will be expected to become certified herbicide applicators. Due to the level of training that our Caretakers go through, we encourage Caretakers to renew their annual position, when possible.
University of Michigan juniors, seniors and graduate students are eligible to apply.
To apply: Caretakers often spend the summer working as a PAID Nature Academy Intern for 30 hours/wk in addition to their 10 hours/wk as a Caretaker throughout the summer. People who are applying for this Dual Appointment will be given priority consideration.
