The Island Institute (Portland, Maine) has opened the annual application period for their Island Fellows Program. This innovative program places college and master’s degree graduates in island and other rural coastal communities. Fellows embed within their host community for two years to provide capacity and help advance needs identified by the communities. For the first time, the Institute is seeking to place a Fellow outside of the Maine, on Beaver Island, Michigan (offshore from Charlevoix in northern Lake Michigan).
This round of Fellows would start in September 2017. The applicant deadline is March 24, 2017.
* Recent completion of a baccalaureate or graduate degree (within five years)
* Demonstrated interest and experience in a field such as community service, community planning, natural-resource planning, GIS mapping, educational outreach, etc.
* A strong service ethic
* A strong desire to live and work within a small, remote community
* Strong self-motivation and the ability to work with minimal supervision
