Precious Rasheeda Muhammad is an author, lecturer, independent scholar, poet, and publisher. She is known for her ability to educate audiences of diverse faiths and backgrounds about America’s unique Islamic heritage, and for her ability to inspire the building of community through a deeper understanding of history. A significant focus of her work has been to build interfaith connections and bridge religious and cultural differences. Precious’s work has been featured on television and National Public Radio, at the Smithsonian, and in classrooms around the country.

Publishers Weekly describes Precious’s chapter, “To Be Young, Gifted, Black, American, Muslim, and Woman,” in the book Living Islam Out Loud: American Muslim Women Speak, as one of the “best” and “most absorbing" essays in an anthology that “opens the door for other writers to explore the important and understudied topic of Muslim American women.”

Precious Muhammad’s recent work includes a paper titled “Muslims and the Making of America,” which documents the presence of Muslims in major aspects of America’s early development. She recently launched “Muslim History Detective,” a blog exploring American Islamic heritage. She is currently working on a nationwide oral history project focusing on the full diversity of the American Muslim experience, as well as other projects that live up to her motto: build community through history.

Precious Rasheeda Muhammad’s talk is sponsored by the Program in International and Comparative Studies at the International Institute; Islamic Studies; Arab American Studies; Afroamerican and African Studies; and Communication Studies.
