Translation for Vulnerable Times: The Iliad and the Aeneid

Monday, January 13, 2014
12:00 AM
Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library, Gallery, #100, 913 S. University

This is an Institute for the Humanities event.

Stanley Lombardo will read from his translation of Homer's Iliad (1997), and Sarah Ruden will read from her translation of Virgil's Aeneid (Yale 2008).  The translators will discuss the creative process of translating classical epic poems from ancient Greek and Latin into English for modern readers.  This panel will be moderated by U-M Professor Yopie Prins and is sponsored by Contexts for Classics at the University of Michigan.

Stanley Lombardo is professor of classics at Kansas University and well known as a translator of Homer, Plato, Hesiod, Callimachus, Sappho, Virgil, Dante, and Ovid.  He has recorded his translations of Homer in audiobooks and given dramatic readings at venues such as the Smithsonian, Chicago Poetry Center, C-Span, and NPR.

Sarah Ruden is a poet, translator, independent scholar, and the first woman to publish a complete translation of Virgil's Aeneid into English. She has received wide acclaim for her classical translations from Virgil, Petronius, Aristophanes, and (most recently) Apuleius. She has also published original poetry and essays on religion and culture.
