Earth 460 : Paleobiology & Paleoenvironments:
6/8 - 7/8

This course will explore that coupled system in detail, looking at both biological and environmental changes, by focusing on interdisciplinary fieldbased case studies. Using the natural laboratory of UM's Camp Davis, as well as sites in places like Colorado, Utah, and Montana, students will learn techniques and skills needed to interpret the rock and fossil record to reconstruct Earth's deep past. An array of observational and analytical skills will be taught, drawing from, but not limited to, sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleobotany, paleozoology, paleoclimate, paleoecology. In addition, students will be presented with opportunities to learn transferable skills in science communication, photography, as well as specialized and general purpose software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop).

Earth 344 Sustainable & Fossil Energy:
6/12-  7/2

An introduction to the scientific concepts, environmental consequences and policy implications of various sustainable and fossil energy sources. Students will then gain a deeper understanding of the topic through extensive site visits in Wyoming and Idaho that trace the fuel cycles from the mining of raw materials through the production of energy and its distribution. Non-renewable energy facilities that will be visited include a uranium mine, coal mine, gas field, oil refinery, power plant and nuclear reactor. Renewable energy facilities that will be visited include a hydroelectric generation station, a run-of-river generation station, a wind farm and a solar photovoltaic facility. No pre-req's are required.
