Richard Atienza, an instructor of Filipino language within the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, will be leading a group of undergraduate students to Metro Manila and the islands of Boracay and Bohol in the Visayas region during summer 2012. This trip, part of the Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates program at the University of Michigan, will entail experiencing and exploring community life within the Philippines through service work. Students involved in the 4-week project will join up with volunteer organizations already established in the regions to understand how impoverished indigenous communities thrive through the support and heroic efforts of such volunteers.
