Round Table Discussion on Immigration, Deportation, & Human Rights Issues along the U.S./Mexico Border

As part of the Institute for Humanities sponsored exhibit “State of Exception” opening on Friday February 7th at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit, the institute is hosting a lunch time round table on campus focused on immigration and border issues that same day. Guest participants include Robert Kee (Arizona border humanitarian), Luis Lopez (one of the “Dream 9” immigration activists), and Jason De León (University of Michigan). Students, faculty, and staff are invited to join us for an open discussion on current border issues including deportation and migrant death in the desert.

Bios:
Robert Kee is a long time member of the Tucson Samaritans, an organization comprised of people of conscience and faith who render humanitarian aid to migrants in distress in the Tucson Sector of the Arizona/Mexico border.

Luis Lopez was born in Mexico but raised in North Carolina. He is one of nine undocumented student activists who donned graduation caps and gowns and attempted to enter the United States through the Nogales, Arizona port of entry in an international protest to raise awareness about the plight of undocumented people. The “Dream 9” protest has been called "one of the most important, radical and powerful direct actions in immigration activism history."

Jason De León is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan and director of the Undocumented Migration Project.
